Shortlisted for 2020 Environment Award for Children’s Literature : Picture Fiction Category

In this stunning picture book beautifully given form by Indigenous artist Lisa Kennedy, respected Elder Aunty Joy Murphy and Yarra Riverkeeper Andrew Kelly tell the story of one day in the life of the vital, flourishing Birrarung (Yarra river).

As ngua rises, Bunjil soars over mountain ash, flying higher and higher as the wind warms. Below, Birrarung begins its long winding path down to palem warreen. Wilam – home.

Yarra Riverkeeper Andrew Kelly joins award-winning picture book duo Aunty Joy Murphy and Lisa Kennedy to tell the Indigenous and geographical story of Melbourne’s beautiful Yarra river, from its source to its mouth; from its pre-history to the present day.

  • An ode to Australian rivers, the flora and fauna that live on them, and the function they perform as a part of modern day life.
  • Wilam brings Aboriginal life, culture and language right in to the heart of the city.
  • From an award-winning team of the bestselling Welcome to Country, and Yarra Riverkeeper and award-winning author Andrew Kelly.

About the Authors

Aunty Joy Murphy is a respected Wurundjeri Elder and author of Welcome to Country. Andrew Kelly is the Yarra Riverkeeper, part of an international organisation of Riverkeepers. He has written numerous books for children and adults.

About the Illustrator

Lisa Kennedy is a descendant of the Trawlwoolway People on the north-east coast of Tasmania. Lisa was born in Melbourne and as a child lived close to the Maribyrnong River. Here she experienced the gradual restoration of the natural river environment alongside cultural regeneration and reclamation. Through sense of place she feels connected to the Wurundjeri country and all that entails – the water, the land, the animals and the ancestors. The experience of loss and reclamation is embedded in her work.

Who is Playdreamers?

Playdreamers is a micro family business owned and operated by myself - mum of three boys, Hannah.

We launched from home as an online store in April 2019. I'd pack orders of an evening with two toddlers by my side, spending late nights adding products to the store and sourcing new items.

During the pandemic I nervously opened our first brick & mortar store in Forster, NSW and in 2022 welcomed a third son.

Fast forward to mid-2024 when a larger space in a sought-after location was calling my name. We relocated our tiny Forster store from a quiet street to the hustle and bustle of Wallis Street in Forster; just off the bridge into town.

I am excited to have welcomed Chloe, a mother of two girls and dear friend, to the team and adore our days together bouncing ideas off each other and sourcing treasures for the children in your lives.

I am so grateful you found us. Your support is incredible - we wouldn't be here without our wonderful customers. Thank you for being here.

Please join us on social media by searching @playdreamers to keep up to date with all the fun. And always feel welcome to reach out - we love getting to know you!
